HOME / FIX GUIDE
Microphone not working? Fix your mic test step by step.
Run these in order — each fixes the majority of remaining cases. After each step, re-test on the live mic tester.
1. Allow browser permission
Look for the crossed-out mic icon in the address bar → set Microphone to Allow → reload. Blocking is the #1 cause.
2. Pick the right input
Laptops expose 4–5 "microphones" (array, headset, webcam, virtual). Use the tester's device dropdown and confirm the active name matches the mic you're speaking into.
3. Quit apps holding the mic
Zoom, Meet, Teams, Discord and game launchers can lock the device exclusively. Quit them fully, not just minimize.
4. Check OS mute + gain
Windows: Settings → Sound → Input → test + volume 50–75%, no boost. macOS: System Settings → Sound → Input. Aim for 40–75% peaks.
5. Cable, port, Bluetooth
Try another USB port, reseat 3.5mm fully, check inline mute switches. For Bluetooth, confirm the headset profile (not headphones-only) is connected.
6. Managed / school devices
Work laptops may disable mic by policy — no browser can override that. Contact IT if no input appears anywhere.
